School Prevention Programs
Prevention Programs (Informed Community, Safe Child, Anger Management, REACH and Challenge Programs):
These prevention programs are available to all Leon County school students, their parents and school staff. They are provided in the form of educational presentations to aid in the prevention of substance use, violence and suicide. These presentations are age appropriate and provide valuable, up-to-date information on a variety of topics, such as drugs, alcohol and their long and short term effects, safety, self-esteem and resiliency, effective parenting. Prevention presentations are provided by Masters or Doctoral level counselors. These presentations are tailored to the needs of the groups requesting them, ranging from classrooms of students, to teachers, to parent nights at a school. These programs also offer educational Anger Management Skills groups in the schools to students who demonstrate indicators of abuse, including at-risk behaviors, to assist students in learning more appropriate ways of dealing with their feelings. Presently providing additional middle school and high school prevention groups on mentoring, social skills training, career identification and development, conflict resolution, substance abuse prevention, family and relationship issues for at-risk youth.
Parents Unite Program:
Parents are provided a support group run by masters and doctoral level counselors. Parents are also provided training in the areas of adolescent development and behavioral strategies appropriate for this age group, substance use, violence, suicide prevention, AIDS/ HIV prevention, eating disorder recognition, and recognition of signs of abuse.
Suicide Prevention Program:
Turn About, Inc. currently provides an extensive range of services and activities to youth to prevent suicide. Turn About, Inc. provides Masters and Doctoral level counselors to all Leon County public schools to aid in the identification and prevention of suicide, including assisting individuals at changing behaviors and choices that often lead to suicide among our youth. Turn About, Inc. also provides free education in the form of presentations that address suicidal indicators and behavioral signs, risk factors, as well as prevention strategies. These presentations are offered to families, community members, and professionals who work with youth and their families.
These programs are school based to make it easier for children, adolescents and their families to access services, and uses a coordinated team approach to effectively meet student's needs. These programs will effectively impact not only prevention of substance use, violence and suicide, but will make significant impact in the area of school drop-out prevention.
